According to Wikipedia(2013), the term of traffic light refer to that signalling devices positioned at road intersections, pedestrian crossings and other locations to control competing flows of traffic. It is general in daily life, no matter in big cities or countryside. Traffic lights in Sydney have three pattens.

The above illusion shows that, red means stop, yellow means slow down the speed, green means pass.In fact, in Sydney, yellow lights is shot and usually contains 2-5 seconds. When crossing intersections, There is forth patten, flickeringly red light, which means people cannot start to cross but may finish crossing.Under observation, it is easy to be fund that most of people still start to cross the road when the red sign is flickering. It is dangerous to both of pedestrians and drivers.Of course, individuals should obey the traffic rules. However, the green time is always short and pedestrians believe that through quickly can avoid the red light.
Whilst in Auckland, traffic lights in CBD with countdown timer. It is really helpful for pedestrians, because they can judge whether or not cross the road. The following video shows how the traffic light counter works in the intersection Queen and Victoria street Auckland.

For now, the city of Sydney decide to carry out traffic counts in CBD, fews already applied on Liverpool St..It is difficult to image that traffic systems in Sydney are far behind other international cosmopolis. However, it is never too late to make difference.
