In April 2014, the city of Sydney adopted the green roofs and walls policy, which is the first policy about this aspect  in Australia. They provides many environmental and community benefits, including improved air quality, beautifying buildings and the cityscape, supporting local biodiversity, supporting our physical and mental health, cooling city temperatures and reducing the urban heat island effect. The term green roof may also be used to indicate roofs that use some form of green technology, such as a cool roof, a roof with solar thermal collectors or photovoltaic panels. Green roofs are also referred to as eco-roofsoikostegesvegetated roofsliving roofsgreenroofs and VCPH(Wikipedia,2015).
The following map shows the locations of green roofs and walls in Sydney. They mainly cluster in the CBD of the city and Surry Hills.

One case is the sustainable building, Surry Hills Library. It was finished by 2009, but the green roof is not accessible. The green roof reduces energy consumption by insulating the building and keeping solar panels on the roof at an optimal temperature. And plants on the roof are irrigated from recycled rain water when needed. It is a sustainable example of green roof in Sydney
